The Second annual Gallery MotoSF and Bay Area Vintage Rider Forum UnFinished Projects and Art Show in San Francisco has just been announced. Rain or shine, the gallery will be open for social on February 25th, with local brews and vintage tunes. Meet the artists and builders in the swanky loft above 8th Street in San Francisco. Music by DJ's Doctor Scott and Miss Cherry Bomb and craft brews by Lone Mountain.

Today in History: Evel Knievel Jumps the Fountains at Caesar's Palace December 31st 1967

While in Las Vegas, Nevada, to watch Dick Tiger fight a middleweight title fight, Knievel first saw the fountains at Caesar's Palace and decided to jump them. To get an audience with the casino's CEO Jay Sarno, Knievel created a fictitious corporation called Evel Knievel Enterprises and three fictitious lawyers to make phone calls to Sarno. Knievel also placed phone calls to Sarno claiming to be from ABC-TV and Sports Illustrated inquiring about the jump. Sarno finally agreed to meet Knievel and the deal was set for Knievel to jump the fountains on December 31, 1967. After the deal was set, Knievel tried to get ABC to air the event live on Wide World of Sports. ABC declined, but said that if Knievel had the jump filmed and it was as spectacular as he said it would be, they would consider using it later.

Knievel used his own money to have actor/director John Derek produce a film of the Caesar's jump. To keep costs low, Derek used his then-wife, Linda Evans, as one of the camera operators. It was Evans who filmed Knievel's famous landing. On the morning of the jump, Knievel stopped in the casino and placed a single $100 dollar bet on the blackjack table, which he lost, stopped by the bar and got a shot of Wild Turkey and then headed outside where he was joined by several members of the Caesar's staff, as well as two scantily clad showgirls. After doing his normal pre-jump show and a few warm up approaches, Knievel began his real approach. When he hit the takeoff ramp, he felt the motorcycle unexpectedly decelerate. The sudden loss of power on the takeoff caused Knievel to come up short and land on the safety ramp which was supported by a van. This caused the handlebars to be ripped out of his hands as he tumbled over them onto the pavement where he skidded into the Dunes parking lot. As a result of the crash, Knievel received a crushed pelvis and femur, fractures to his hip, wrist and both ankles and a concussion that kept him in a coma for 29 days.

Nevada County Food and Toy Run 2011

Four motorcyclists wondered what could be done to help families in need during the upcoming holiday season. They came up with an interesting idea and within a few weeks created an event.

The first event was the birth of the Nevada County Food & Toy Run and drew 90 bikers. A responsive cord was struck with the Sierra Foothill communities of Nevada City and Grass Valley and today, the Food & Toy Run feeds hundreds of local families in need during the Christmas holiday.

Every second Saturday in December – rain, snow or shine – hundreds of spectators line the route to watch motorcyclists (a record was set in 2009 with over 1,800!) rumble through the towns of Nevada City and Grass Valley on their way to the Nevada County Fairgrounds. There, hundreds of children and their families await in anticipation.

Every family in need receives a turkey or ham and donated foods to take home for the Holidays. Each child receives at least 3 toys and everyone celebrates with food vendors, raffle prizes and maybe a visit with Santa.

Each year the Nevada County Food & Toy Run feeds hundreds of local families and provides toys for kids who may otherwise receive none.

Bonneville Bound, BUB Speed Trials 2011

Pops and Troop are on their way for a week on the Salt, helping the crew from BUB Enterprises run the 8th Annual BUB Speed Trials, Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah. It's the world's premier venue for two-wheeled land speed records, as well as everyman's attempt at setting a record on their motorcycle, no matter the class. If you ride, this is YOUR event.

Local Event Report: Throwback Thursdays in Grass Valley

Throwback Thursdays

The third Thursday of each month, the streets of Grass Valley thump and rumble to the tune of “throwbacks.” No, it’s not the name of a band, but refers to the “pipe music” produced by numerous vintage motorcycles of the bobber, chopper and club racer persuasion. They gather at Paco’s Tacos, 550 Mill Street, literally a stone’s throw off the intersection of Highway 49 and Empire Street/Highway 20 West.

Throwback Thursdays is the creation of Jared Wambaugh, a former US Army Infantry Captain and life long motorcycle rider. Part of his enthusiasm for motorcycles stems from the influence of his father David, owner of Paco’s Tacos and a life long rider and customizer. The Wambaugh’s tastes in motorcycling have tended toward the home-built customs that place function over form and constructed with hand built pieces instead of bolt-ons. When the idea arose of having a “meet” of some kind in the foothills, it was only natural that the bikes would be throwbacks and the place would be Paco’s.

Their July meet brought out about 35 throwbacks, a relatively low turnout owing to the 100 degree heat of the day. But the scoots were true to their billing: lots of hardtails, straight pipes and no-frills builds. A true bare-knuckled display of the metal and fire that motorcycles embody. Even though Harleys and Triumphs do constitute the bulk of the pack, throwbacks are not limited to brand names or countries of origin. Some of the bikes were vintage Japanese, such as a really cool hard tail Yamaha twin, a mildly bobbed early-80’s Kawasaki 4-banger and there was even a raked out chopper powered by an old Honda 750 single cam. Cool stuff.

The parking lot and restaurant make an ideal venue for an event of this size and the strong local “buy in” by the riders I spoke to make it clear that Throwback Thursdays is making a name for itself in the “Northern Mines” area (thanks for the history lesson Dave). Grass Valley may be a bit of a ride for some of you reading this, but stop whining and do it. Do it just once this summer. The ride is beautiful, the bikes are bitchin’ and you can grab some great Mexican food while you’re there.

Those who've heard need only show up to experience one of the chillest good times events in these gold studded foothills of Northern California. From near and far over a single weekend in August weary two-wheeled travelers converge on the little slice of roadside heaven known as the Afterhours Honkeytonk.

Not a public wellhouse, rather a private drinking Club, the Honkeytonk has fed and entertained many a thirsty vagabond of taste and intrigue. You see, Gabe and crew do not take friendly to your typical roadhouse clientele. Farbeit from him to serve up a drafty, frigid pint to a fringe wearing electric start land pirate, Gabe demands that his customers be friends first, and garage built vintage chopper freaks second. All other types (sportbikers, H.O.G. riders, and vespa drivers) won't even be able to find the place. That's right friends, the legendary Afterhours Honkeytonk, like those swanky speakeasys of almost a century ago, is not for everyone. It's only for the chosen few who know its locale, and can handle the weight of its myth.

If you're up for the time of your life, replete with the finest of spirits and the savoriest of meats (not to mention the most sumptuous baked goods this side of the Yuba), then head on out for the Philo, a family reunion where if you're friends, you're family. Throwbacks'll see you there!

Troop's Ride to Born Free -- Report

So finally made it back to Grass Valley, after an adventure I'll never forget. I highly recommend attending Born Free in any capacity possible. It truly was an overwhelming experience to be at the show and soak it all in. Honestly it was too much for a single day.

Departed my home at about 11am Thursday morning, rode out to Vacaville to meet Cris who decided to join me just hours before. What a soldier!

Cris and I jammed out to Santa Cruz to meet the Clutch Monkey Crew: Foo Man Lou, Jenna and Smokey Shane. We grabbed a slice at Santa Cruz's famous "Pizza My Heart", dodged being overcharged for beers, and were later joined by Too Late Timmy for the midnight ride to Big Sur.

Rolled into camp at about 10pm after jamming some serious twisties on Hwy 1 in the mist. What a ride! Didn't feel bad at all blasting into camp and rousting the nieghbors, we barely survived! We couldn't get Too Late Timmy out of his blanket, so we headed out for breakfast without him.

The roads were fantastic, a couple construction areas forced us into a single lane. The road was clear through the landslide area from a week ago, so we had no trouble hitting the twisties and having a ball on the coast road.

Then it went bad. Just after a gas stop in Cambria, at about 70mph on Hwy 1 the 66 6T failed me. Completely losing power, I coasted to the shoulder and feverishly tore into it to fix the electrical issue. After an hour of troubleshooting, we gave up and called in the reinforcements: Jenna and her Carolla! Who knew a little 4 banger jap car could haul a trailer with such vigor! Just don't ask it to stop.

The car got me and my machine all the way to our destination, and I decided that at the show I would recruit the help I would need to find the problem and fix it.

Finalizing all the preparations for departure Thursday. Test ran the load with freeway gearing out to Elk Grove and everything's copacetic at speed on the freeways. No leaks, no oil consumption, no shakes or shimmies. All important considerations on a 45 year old machine loaded for bear.

All that remains is to finalize the packing list and toolset and we're ready to rock out on the open road, departing Thursday at noon from Grass Valley.

Throwbacks Thursday June Report

Had a killer turnout of 80+ bikes and riders from all over enjoy an evening of swapping stories and showing class.

Sarah Butcher Photography was present, in support of Throwbacks' friend Karl Lanquist and his most recent bout with heart failure. Still recovering at U.C. Davis Medical Center following his second pacemaker replacement surgery, Karl is a local character whose own skills with a camera and quick wit are well known. S.B. Photo was out selling some of Karl's handiwork in the form of photos of bikes from past Throwbacks events, as well as "Have a Heart" red ribbons, 100% of the proceeds taken as contributions towards Karl's mounting medical bills. Look for S.B. Photo's booth at upcoming events around the Grass Valley area, and show your support for one of Nevada County's purest characters in his time of need.

Alright everyone, our friendly neighborhood Throwbacks Thursday ride-in and monthly meetup is kicking off right around the corner. We'll endure some more small battles with ugly weather and such, giving Throwbacks and friends time to get their cycles finished up from a short hibernation and back out on the road where they can rule. Be ready, April is coming quickly and we've got some great new ideas to keep it fresh and fun.

Tunes spun by DJ Ray and family-friendly atmosphere, hallmarks of how it's done Throwbacks style. As usual the taco joint will be open for business and we're looking forward to the regulars as well as new meat on the curb.

Vor's Unfinished Projects Show

Vorhese threw his first Unfinished Projects show last Saturday in the wet and wild city of San Francisco. Throwbacks had a blast, Joe public had a blast. While it rained all day, GalleryMoto SF was high and dry on the second floor. Turn out was massive, packing the gallery and bringing together the sleazy greasy old bike set alongside the highbrow art and fashion set. Not a natural mix at first, but the only clash was with the clientele of the "Wicked Grounds" bondage coffee shop next door. Only in SF! Beer rescue runs were required several times, old vinyl was spun with reckless abandon, and everyone had a great time. Not even a single exhibit was knocked over. These city folk know how to party!

Submissions filled fast for rolling art, but you may get something on canvas in the show if you're quick to dial. Troop's Birthday Ride -- Report

Had a great turn out and some fantastic weather to celebrate Troop's birthday on Saturday. 30+ of the worst ne'er-do-wells to ever lay tire to tarmac turned out for an 80 mile jaunt through the foothills.

Miles were lain, beers were sipped, and one friend "Mittens" went down and earned himself a nickname. Recovering with minor damage to self and major damage to cycle, Mittens will ride again soon. It was a good day, with everyone counting their blessings by the end. Throwbacks thank everyone who made it out to Grass Valley or supported someone to do so. We'll do it all again soon.

Sunday.

It was just Vorhese and Pops for a bit. After some breakfast, we hit the garage and started setting up the day's fabrication. Doug decided to head up from the Bay to help out.

Troop showed up so it was 4 of us working. We spent quite a while cleaning up the fender, Pops welded up the foot brake brackets, Doug and Pops worked on the front brake stay, and Troop continued to work on motor parts and modified the seat, making his preliminary parts list of all things Triumph.

We got the fender mostly mounted before Vorhese had to pack up and head home.

So Vorhese's preunit was left there. He'll be heading back in another week to finish things up. Pops took the hard tail in and TIG welded all the brackets, those weld porn shots posted earlier. It couldn't have been done without the support and love of the Throwbacks. The combined knowledge, skills, penchant for nonsense, dubiousness, hospitality, and comaradery makes it a blast to do what we do.

Throwbacks Wrench Party - Day 2

Saturday.

All 3 of us woke up feeling like we ate bad sushi and eggs the night before. The pancakes Pops made us helped a little. But pretty much the whole day was spent feeling nauseous and uneasy. It ain't easy being green.

After an eternity of getting the 18" wheel together and another bitter struggle assembling the forks we had a roller.

Troop reassembled and modified the drive line to get all the spacing right.

So we had a roller

With all our painstaking attention to detail, a second opinion and advice was required on a couple things. It also gave us a chance to pay a visit. We loaded up the truck to see local guru Robert Cohelan.

Robert has been there, done that, seen it all: British, American, Italian, German, etc. of pretty much any vintage. he rides and maintains a breathtaking example of the John Player Norton, one of the great original Big Tobacco sponsored repli racers of all time. We caught up with Robert while he was working on Travis' '51 Triumph Thunderbird show-and-go custom.

Advice given. Advice taken. No fees, no heartache. We headed back to Pops' garage and started working on the seat. Pops made some new bungs while I made a new front pivot bracket. Troop was working on tearing apart the transmission.

The seat was mounted. And we called it a night.

Throwbacks Wrench Party - Day 1

What a weekend. We got a lot done, and yet we still have so far to go on Vorhese's Triumph. A good time was had by all.

Friday.

Our friend Francisco lent his truck to get Vorhese's heap out to GV from the Bay. Alongside Vorhese's preunit rode his friend's mostly original 1957 preunit. After a 4 hour drive (it should be around 2-1/2) through horrible traffic full of people trying to get to the powder-covered mountains, Vorhese rolled into Grass Valley and greeted everyone. We had some 'za and hit the garage.

Friday was mostly setting everything out and going over a game plan. After Pops got over laughing after looking at my welds and Troop did an overall inspection, we made a to-do list. A big one. (That's what she said.)

And christened the start of the weekend.

You might notice how great some of these pictures are. The good ones are courtesy of Sarah Butcher of SB Photography, a friend of the crew who stopped by and snagged a few of us acting like regular buffoons.

That night we got the basic mockup together and started talking things out. Since Vorhese took the suggestion to change to a shorter rigid section everything he'd done to that point had to be redone. Despite all the "wasted" work everyone agrees it was the right decision. Everything just fell into place, proportionately, stylistically, and functionally.

The rest of Friday was spent just drinking. We'd pay for it on Saturday.

Throwbacks Thursdays

The third Thursday of each month in the summer marks the humble public gathering of vintage cycle enthusiasts and traditional chopper fiends we call Throwbacks Thursday. Held in the quaint foothill town of Grass Valley, crowds of three and four score participants flock to the small parking lot the TT calls home. This isn't a bike show, this a ride-in event. Known for its rich history as a mining town in the California Gold Rush era, Grass Valley features "gold" of a second sort nowadays. Free of pushy sponsors, crowd mingling promoters, or commercial go getters of any type, all in attendance are free to roam the packed lot to see what wonderful two-wheeled miracles rolled in, and to share what they themselves rode.

The purveyers of the tiny taco joint called Paco's Tacos make their fare available during the meet, and with full bellies and plenty of gawk-worthy cycles to ogle the whole family can have a good time. Part of the success is the accessibility of the location, at the junction of Hwy 49 (California's scenic Gold Rush Trail) and Hwy 20, riders from as far East as Reno, Nevada and as far west as Dixon regularly make the ride out.

There's no fees collected, no admission, but this isn't your typical bike night either. Do-rags are rarely seen, and nary a billet barge has ever attended. There's no weenie bite competition, no river of beer, and it's not really even a show. Old guys and young guns alike arrive to show the fruits of their efforts and to swap contact information to fuel their next project. It is as it should be, and if that makes sense to you, we look forward to seeing you for our season closer on October 21st 5-8pm.

From the only one of the Throwbacks to make the Saturday ride, here's my report:

Starting with the perfect weather that dabbled between 65 degrees as I rolled out of Grass Valley at 8am to the 85 degrees as we hit the alpine water of Sugarpine Reservoir, not a bead of sweat fell from my brow until negotiating the posted 5 MPH switchbacks of Iowa Hill Road. And it had nothing to do with ambient temp, it was sweat from considering the stakes if my Triumph's single 7 inch rear brake shoe or any of its components failed! Trying to keep up with Rory on his Sportster Scrambler certainly proved a challenge, and he was [I]two[/I]-up!

A cold beer at the bar on top of Iowa Hill (if anyone can answer the query of how you keep beer cold without electricity on top of a hill, open your own bar somewhere else, these people somehow do it!) and a mad dash back to Colfax and civilization via the most scenic canyon road I've seen in some time. Considerably refreshed we jammed back via the shortest, fastest route to HQ - the Grange Hall - for kegs of NAFTA Beer (domestic tastes on both sides of the contested US/Mexico Border were met) and some leftover cookies and spaghetti.

A big Thank You goes out here to Gabe's much better half, Lois, who whipped up some of the best background grub I've had this far from the dirty South. Hand-beaten biscuits, gooey cookies, killer salad (not that iceburg and ranch crap), all-day beans, the list goes on. Even grilled veggies to compliment Gabe's outstanding effort at the helm of his masterpiece; the Merrimack! What a grand Ironclad she is, capable of handling not only gargantuan tri-tip, but likewise smoking tube steaks with aplomb! Only Gabe himself could design such a contraption (experience help much?)

Beyond the food and drink, the overall atmosphere was perfect. No breaks in the shade in the 2 acre milling area surrounding the Hall, there was little need to venture indoors save to sample some of the treats Lois was preparing or swig some harder libations. The crowd was the best I've gotten to mingle with in some time, and no attitudes anywhere. Everyone had a great time, the raffle made a lot of people happy, and the shenanigans continued long after I stumbled home.

The subjects are a couple of recent Sportster builds by my friend lil Mike of the Sacto crew. In the last year, in addition to these two featured, he's recently finished his own stellar panhead chopper, which he rode to the GV Roll-in.

lil Mike eschews the influence of others (to include the internet) in his builds, preferring instead to follow the whims of his own imagination. This unique approach, much like that of the builders holed up in heated garages in the pacific northwest, Sweden, and other lands of long nights, shows in everything that falls under his torch and hammer. His attention to how the details of a machine combine into the whole defines the style of the build. The parts tell the story, and so far each has a happy ending.

lil Mike finished this delightful Ironhead last summer, and Dan, the lucky new owner has been tearing up the twisties all across NorCal since.

This Late model Evo Sportster was finished in time for a 1000 mile shake down run to Born Free 2 earlier this summer. Its new owner, Jay, rides it like there's no tomorrow. Perhaps he's right?!

Look for more on lil Mike's insane and wonderful creations in future episodes. While the photography may not be as good as these, you will not be disappointed.

My wife's grandfater on the far left and a couple of his riding buddies. The guy on the far right was killed about a month after this photo was taken and the kat in the center sold his bike after that. My Gpa in-law rode up to about 10 or so years ago. One hell of a man.

A cool shot from Freemont Dragstrip @ 67. A bike built by my uncle in his basement. He used a plumbob and the floor joyces to lay out the frame on the basement floor. The rider is Dave Schwerma?? the writing on the photo has faded. According to my uncle the bike/rider broke more than a couple of records at that track. I'd kill to have that helmet!

Came across some photos from my first trip in '07. Marty Dickerson, in his 80's first run of the morning and set a new record...WTF?? Got to talk to him a bit, hell of a neat man. The GV Roll-In this year was another great time. Folks came in from all around with a great contingent headed up by Shrewgy from ACE Skateboard Trucks. Some really wicked scoots and the rad people that ride them, and some skateboard stuff as well. Camped out in the town of Rough and Ready, some headed to the river to swim to beat the heat, others put down some Beer:30 and babysat the gritty piggy roasting in its subterranean grave. All had a great time.
